Application Process for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Card

To apply for an OCI card, please follow the step-by-step process outlined below:

Gather Required Documents: Collect all the supporting documents in PDF format as per the guidelines provided. These documents may include proof of Indian citizenship, proof of marriage (for spouses of Indian citizens), and any other relevant identification or residency documents.

Prepare Applicant's Photo and Signature: Make sure you have the applicant's photograph and signature in the specified dimensions and file formats as mentioned earlier. Ensure that the images are clear and meet the specified size requirements.

Online Registration: Visit the official website for OCI registration and create an account. Fill in the necessary personal and contact details as requested in the application form. Provide accurate information to avoid any discrepancies.

Upload Documents and Images: Upload the supporting documents and the applicant's photograph and signature as per the provided instructions. Make sure the files are in the required format and within the specified size limit.

Eligibility Criteria for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Card

To determine your eligibility for registration as an OCI cardholder, you must meet one or more of the following criteria:

Citizenship: You were a citizen of India on or after January 26th, 1950, or became eligible for Indian citizenship on that date.

Territory Belonging: You belong to a territory that became part of India after August 15th, 1947.

Lineage: You are a child, grandchild, or great-grandchild of an Indian citizen.

Minor Child: You are a minor child of an eligible Indian citizen.

Minor Child with Indian Parent: You are a minor child, and both your parents are Indian citizens, or at least one of your parents is an Indian citizen.

Important Considerations:

Spouse of Indian Citizen: If you are a foreign national who is married to an Indian citizen, and your marriage has been registered and subsisted for a continuous period of at least two years, you are also eligible to apply for OCI registration.

Exclusions: Individuals who or whose parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents have been citizens of Pakistan, Bangladesh, or any other country specified by the Central Government through notification in the Official Gazette are not eligible for OCI registration.

Application from within India: Foreign nationals cannot apply for OCI while on a Tourist Visa, Missionary Visa, or Mountaineering Visa. Additionally, to apply for OCI registration in India, the foreigner must be an ordinary resident, meaning they must have resided in India continuously for a period of six months.

Prerequisites for OCI Application:

Before starting your OCI registration, make sure you have the following:

Applicant's Photograph: An image of the applicant with equal height and width. The dimensions should be between 200 pixels (width) x 200 pixels (height) and 3500 pixels (width) x 3500 pixels (height).

Applicant's Signature: An image of the applicant's signature with an aspect ratio of 1:3. The dimensions should be between 200 pixels (width) x 67 pixels (height) and 3500 pixels (width) x 2500 pixels (height).

Supporting Documents: Gather all the necessary supporting documents in PDF format, with each file size not exceeding 1000kb.

The Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) cards, which is highly popular among overseas Indians, provide long-term visa-free travel and stay in India and gives the cardholders a host of privileges normally not given to a foreign national.

Why FRRO registration is required?

How many times can I apply for Schengen visa?

I lost my passport in the U.S. and have been sent to India on Emergency Certificate. Can I be issued a new passport? If yes, what are the documents needed to get a passport?

In case of lost passport, you need to apply for re-issue of passport. Following documents must be submitted along with the application:

Proof of Present Address
Proof of Date of Birth
Affidavit stating how and where the passport got lost/damaged (Annexure 'F')
Police report in original
Self-attested photocopy of first two and last two pages, including ECR/Non-ECR page of old passport, if available.
Original EC/Seizure Memo
Cases may also require confirmation from Indian Mission/Post concerned.
